Sweater Weather: 9 Stunning Styles of Sweaters for Women to Try

Sweater weather: Stunning styles of sweaters for women to try

It’s officially sweater weather, and we couldn’t be more thrilled!

In honour of this mag-knit-ficent time of year, we’re sharing 9 of our top favourite styles of sweaters to try this season (and to keep in your closet for years to come).

1. The Textured Knit

From thick cable knits to fluffier Angora styles, the textured knit sweater is a classic addition to any fall or winter wardrobe. In order to ensure you’re always on trend, just make sure that this texture is derived from the actual sweater fabric itself vs. sewn on as an embellishment (e.g. ruffles, patches, sequins or pom poms). A timeless textured sweater will generally consist of sophisticated weave patterns.

One of our current favourite textured knits is the Tomie Chunky Knit Sweater from Heartloom.

2. The Oversized Sweater

It’s hard not to feel cute in an oversized sweater! We especially love cinching the waist with a belt for a more shapely look, or even tucking the sweater up into the bra band for a cropped moment, paired with a high-waisted pant (bootcut jeans or skinnies are always a shape-flattering bottom complimentary to this baggier top).

3. The Off the Shoulder Sweater

With sweaters traditionally doing a lot of covering up, we don’t blame you if you still want to show a little skin (perhaps while on a date!) without having to sacrifice any sweater-wearing privileges. The perfect solution is the off-the-shoulder sweater, which effortlessly combines sexy, cozy, stylish and warm. It’s also an extremely versatile piece that happens to pair well with just about any bottoms.

Try the Yolanda Dolman Sweater from Sadie and Sage featuring an ultra soft and cozy fabric.

4. The Fisherman (Aran) Knit

Also known as the Aran sweater due to its Aran Islands origins, the Fisherman sweater was originally made from undyed sheep’s wool. Today, this style of sweater refers to basically any pullover in a neutral shade of beige or white that contains a distinct texture to the knit.

Aran sweaters are trendy, cozily ravishing, and ready to make your winter wardrobe that much more sophisticated.

5. The Striped Sweater

While it never really left, the striped sweater is back and trending (in a big way) for this 2023 winter season! Go classic with the graphic navy and white striped Breton knit, or try other variations in black & white, including less conventional cuts with flared sleeves, or with a polo collar to show off a little more collarbone.

Right now, we’re eyeing our latest subtle and B&W twist on the classic striped knit - the Dayz Stripe Sweater from Saltwater Luxe, in addition to our Madison The Label’s Sila Black & White Stripe Sweater, if you’re feeling even more stripes.

6. The Collared Sweater

A sexy and sophisticated Polo neck is and has been the moment, and we certainly aren’t complaining. Wear this classy sweater as a standalone piece with a dainty necklace, style it as a chic base to a sophisticated layered look with a fitted blazer, or pull a more casual, laid-back ‘fit underneath a denim jacket. There are many ways to wear this universally flattering staple, so have fun with it!

For a collared sweater with a looser fit, check out the elegant Nancy Ottoman White Sweater from RD Style, available in a number of colour options.

7. The Sweater With Pants

The basic sweater + dress pants or sweater + denim jeans combo are looks that are not only easy to put together, but looks that can also be easily dressed up or dressed down.

Pair dress pants with your sweater for a comfortable yet more business-friendly look (we’re loving a high-waisted trouser and cropped cowl knit combo). A casual-cute jeans and sweater moment is also one that can’t possibly go out of style, with the option of accessorizing in any which way you choose to create a look that’s truly yours.

8. The Sweater With Leggings or Sweatpants

When the vibe calls for comfort, you really can’t do much wrong with a leggings or sweatpants plus sweater combo - although the former does lean a little more off-duty chic than the other.

For a partially shape-hugging and cool athleisure aesthetic, choose a pair of high-waisted leggings to pair with your new fav knit, and top (bottom) it down with some chunky socks. For a cute and loungey ‘fit that we’re sure Drake was referencing in “Best I Ever Had”, mix and match your coziest sweater with a pair of bum-flattering joggers (and feel free to whip your hair up to really complete this relaxed look).

9. The Sweater Dress

Last, but certainly not least: the sweater dress is a timeless, feminine and truly versatile piece that can be styled in a number of different ways. Wear your sweater dress with a pair of skinnies or pleather tights, or go bare-legged and let your over-the-knee boots do the insulating.

To accessorize, we love topping off the look with a woolly beanie and a chic statement handbag or crossbody. Creating more shape with a belt at the waist is also never off the table.
